1965 Conn 28A Connstellation Bore: #1 bore (0.438") Bell: 5 1/8" Electro-D Cali-Bore tone column calibration By the mid-1960s, Conn was approaching the end of its Elkhart production era for cornets, which concluded in 1971. Instruments from this period (serials roughly 7xx,xxx to Mxx,xxx) are considered “late model” Connstellations. They feature the Electro-D bell and a Coprion (seamless) leadpipe. Electro-D Bell Used on the 38A and 38B models, the Electro-D bell was a brass bell electrolytically plated first with copper, then with nickel. Conn described this as a scientific application of hard nickel designed to bring out the instrument’s “total tone.” The process is similar in concept to Coprion construction, relying on electrolytic metal deposition. Cali-Bore Cali-Bore refers to Conn’s process of calibrating the entire tone column of the instrument—from mouthpipe to bell flare—to ensure accurate acoustical measurements at every critical point. Additional specifications: #2½ bore (0.485") variant with a 5 1/8" Electro-D bell Nickel plated with brass trim Top-spring valves Approximate weight (38A): 2 lb 13 oz
